Conventional treatment of Atopic dermatitis is directed at controlling itching and dryness of skin, and to prevent and decrease secondary infection.
Lubricants : To retain moisture in the skin. E.g. Petroleum jelly, moisturizing soaps, etc
Lotions : They are easier to apply and hence are used in hair-bearing areas.
Antihistamines : To reduce the itching, since Atopic dermatitis is not histamine mediated it does not give much relief. Since patients tend to scratch during sleep sedating them with antihistamine helps.
Antibiotics: Antibiotics are used to control secondary infection and inflammation of the lesion.
Corticosteroids: These are used in the form of ointments, lotions and oral preparations.
Tar Preparations: These have anti-inflammatory and anti-pruritic properties.
